Friday, June 24 - East Vamps w/ Bloody but Unbowed + 49 Degrees

8:30pm 49 Degrees - surfing vancouver Journey to Western Vancouver Island's rugged coastline for a chance to see the birth of this northwest surf culture phenomenon. At 49 Degrees - Fahrenheit and parallel, cold water surfing thrives by the ancient temperate rainforests of Western Canada. Canada's west coast surfers have existed in their utopian solitude for more than 30 years. What was once a remote and simple way of life is now at the hands of a globalizing culture.

9:40 pm Bloody but Unbowed - "The biggest laugh at the recent screening of the documentary Bloodied But Unbowed was seeing Randy Rampage and Brad Kent pulling up to the Granville Seven in a stretch limousine. Good for them. They couldn't have afforded one in 1978. Riding in a limo in '78 wasn't a punk thing to do, but 30 years later it seems typically irreverent, if not ironic. It also signifies the status Rampage and Kent have acquired as important figures in the original punk scene. Bloodied But Unbowed is Susanne Tabata's story of how punk rock developed in the city between 1978 and '81, and hints at its downfall. It was shown at the DOXA festival of documentary films. Though both screenings were sold out and DOXA is over, there is the feeling that Tabata hasn't finished tinkering with her film. It's good, though, and a great soundtrack CD could be made of it." Mark's music is so authentic in its back porch vibe, it seems to come with its own direct link to Loretta Lynn's '60s heyday - like her heroes, Mark is not afraid to rail against a man too drunk to understand his own fuck-ups. Not to say Mark is some kind of saint: Her gigs are known for their off-balance candor and ribald humor as much as the homespun tunes. Go for the music, stay for the dirty jokes. -Metromix New York
